rage against the machine-evil empire

Supplemental information in regards to the Event Bulletin sent for January 16-20.

For the Students of the Indian Subcontinent Movie sessions here are some brief synopses about the movies to be shown and addressed.

A preview and small snippet of the movie scripts are provided for each of the movies mentioned above:

3 Idiots:

The Highest grossing film in the first week of its release in India, this movie has a large outreach across the globe. It is a fun film and is based on the events that happen at IIT, a premier Engineering School based in a few cities across India.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara:

A Bollywood blockbuster movie whose title means "You only get to life life once" in Hindi. In this movie, three old friends decide to go on an unforgettable trip to Spain and have the time of their lives.

Watch the Trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb45BxTq4qA

Udaan:

An Indian art film in which a young boy is banished from boarding school after getting in trouble, only to meet a strict father who wants his son to turn into an engineer and become trapped in his business. But the boy wants to be a writer and has no interest in the thought of pursuing engineering. In spite of this he obeys his Dad's words and enrolls in an engineering school and tries his best to complete his degree. But his hatred for the subject only increases at school and his Dad's constant censuring does not do any good to help that either. An impactful movie surely worth a watch.

Lagaan:

The people of a small village in Victorian India stake their future on a game of cricket against their ruthless British rulers. However this time, it isn't played as a game, but instead as a battle whose result would decide the fate of the people in the village and whether or not they would have to pay taxes to the British rulers for the next three years.

JSO needs performers for their Japan Night this term!

JAPAN NIGHT NEEDS PERFORMERS (FREE TICKET, FREE FOOD, AND A FREE
T-SHIRT!)
Japan Night is looking to do two dances at Japan Night. We are looking
for people to dance in one or both of them. The two dances are Soran
Bushi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZegdMSZaWac [3]) and The Age Age
Dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5yvKS0Gcec [4]). Currently we
only have 4 people signed up who want to dance, so we need many more
people! JSO members who have danced in the past have said that learning
and performing dances for Japan Night was some of the most fun they've
ever had, and many Japan Night audience members have said that the
dances are their favorite part of Japan Night every year!

Dancers do not have to be regular JSO members. So please feel free to
forward any and all of this information to any friends you think may be
interested! Dancers get free Japan Night admittance, food, and a
t-shirt! If you are interested in dancing, please contact our Event
Director, Carrie Stafford (cstaffo2@uoregon.edu).

Unfortunately the EMU SAC information is not available to post on this website at the moment, HOWEVER if you would like a copy of the information you can contact our email (apasu8@gmail.com) for the supplemental information.

Public schools are supposed to represent equality and access in the U.S. Instead, public education in many low-income areas is a stronger reinforcer of the status quo than a tool to secure a better life. It is the task of our generation to ensure a better future for our students. Teach For America is dedicated to reversing this injustice by enlisting some of our most ambitious, passionate, and driven future leaders to enter our neediest classrooms and close the gap between students from low-income backgrounds and their higher-income counterparts.
As Teach For America’s Recruitment Director at the University of Oregon, it is my goal to enlist advocates of all types of involvement and career ambitions in our work. This begins by establishing the issue our movement attempts to address and stressing the urgency around improving the circumstance for our nation’s children. To that end, I invite you to join us for a movie screening of Waiting For Superman– a movie depicting the injustices created by inadequate K-12 schools. Here is a link to the trailer: http://www.waitingforsuperman.com/.
Title: Movie With a Mission: Educational Equity and Waiting For Superman
Date: January 18th
Location: Willamette 110
Time: 6:30pm

Week 9 & Thanksgiving

Last week (Week 8) we had our weekly meeting, only this time it was a joint meeting with MEChA!! It was a great time and full of information about the Farmworkers Movement, a topic that resonates with the Asian, Pacific Islander and Hispanic communities.

This week we do not have a general meeting as its THANKSGIVING! That means we have an awesome 4 day weekend, and 5 days if you're lucky. However if you have nothing to do or you are wanting to hang out with the APASU crowd we will be hosting a Thanksgiving event at Marie Calendars at around 6pm on Saturday (November 26th).  This will be a great time just to sit down and socialize with other APASU and non-APASU people!  Also if you are going to the CIVIL WAR football game, we will be having a group outing to the game and hangout at Stadium Park Apartments afterwards until we end up going to Marie Calendars.

Next week we will have an event in THE BREAK!  It will be a fun time and a great break from studying.  So come out and enjoy pizza, play pool and meet lots of other APASU and non-APASU members!  It will be from 5-7pm in The Break!

APASU will be making sweatshirts for sale, the official price is not known at this time, but if you are interested in buying one there will be a facebook interest group or you can stop by the office or email APASU!  These sweatshirts were designed by our very own Ryan Sagawa and they look amazing!

01 November 2011 Meeting – The effects of corporate prostitution and exploitation of cultures.

Hi everyone, hope midterms are not too stressful!

This week's meeting we will be focusing on a Pacific Islander topic, to be more specific the Hawaiian Culture and how corporate tourism has affected the culture and people. The meeting will be based off of an article written by the Hawaiian Social Activist Haunani Kay Trask entitled "Lovely Hula Hands, Coporate Tourism and the Prostitution of Hawaiian Culture." We will be discussing how corporate tourism has taken over Hawai'i and has adversely impacted the Hawaiian culture and people. We will also be discussing her usage of

dht-listen_to_your_heart-2005-mbi

vangelis - spiral (remastered)-2006 - newage 1977 "prostitution of a culture" and how tourism has created a cultural duality which mocks traditional Hawaiian culture and exists solely to provide entertainment and enjoyment for tourists. Lastly, we will look into how other cultures are facing the problem of corporate exploitation, where they are dehumanized and seen as avenues of entertainment and  . So please come and participate in this discussion about an important issue that we should all be aware of.

IMPORTANT:
We encourage you to preview the article before attending the meeting as it will provide some insight and direction to the activities during the meeting.  However, we understand that everyone has a busy schedule around this time and we will try our best to summarize it for you at the meeting.

We look forward to hearing your opinions of the topic and seeing you at the meeting!  Thank you!

This year's staff is looking forward to a fantastic year, and we are especially excited for the new members we met at our first meeting!!  Additionally, we are now hiring for our Webmaster and Jr. Executive positions (see details below), which are a fantastic opportunity to get involved at UO and become a part of the staff for one of the largest student groups on campus!! Once again, welcome back APASU - it's going to be a great year!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Week 2 Meeting: Culture Share - A great opportunity to get to know fellow APASU members, especially for those who are new to the group. As always, the meeting will be held in the MCC (in the basement of the EMU) Wednesdsay 10/5 at 5 pm.

NOW HIRING!! Webmaster and Jr. Executive positions: We are now accepting applications for Webmaster and Jr. Executives.

Webmaster is a full-time staff member responsible for maintaining and updating the APASU website, maintaining the e-mail account by answering e-mails, sending updates to members, keeping the list server current, forwarding e-mails, and presenting co-sponsorship requests received by the e-mail account. Additionally, the Webmaster takes minutes at all staff meetings and sends them to the rest of the staff after the meeting. This position is recommended (but not limited to) returning APASU members, though freshmen and new members who are second year students are encouraged to apply for the Junior Executive position (see below).

Junior Executives are APASU interns who are full members of staff.  First and second year students are given priority, so that leadership skills may be developed, but upperclassmen will also be considered. Their main responsibility is organizing Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month Opening Ceremony in May, but they also assist in planning general meetings and events along with the rest of staff.

Application Process: Submit a cover letter describing your previous leadership experience and why you are interested in being a Junior Executive or Webmaster.  Once you submit your cover letter, we will contact you to schedule an interview for some time during Week 4, and new staff members will begin attending staff meetings beginning on Monday, 10/24 during Week 5.

Time Commitment: Staff meets weekly to plan general meetings and upcoming events.  Staff members are required to attend all APASU events unless there is a school-related conflict. Staff must also hold four office hours a week.

Applications due: Sunday, October 16.  E-mail to apasu@uoregon.edu. Please put "Junior Exec Cover Letter" or "Webmaster Cover Letter" in the subject line.
